Hero: Oprah Winfrey

America’s beloved best friend

Any person who is greatly admired from the society because of his/her brave acts and great achievements is a protagonist (hero). In today’s society, so much bad is happening around us. The world is becoming more corrupt. Since heroes are selfless and do whatever it takes to save someone else from peril and conflict, ordinary people are constantly inspired to do the same. A hero possesses the value of his/her culture, such as bravery, honesty and self sacrifice.

My hero is like no other. Oprah Winfrey is every woman’s role model in the American society n around the globe. She was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, in January 29, 1954. She was an only child to a teenage mother. She spent the first 6 years of her life living in rural poverty with her grandmother while her mother was working in the north, after that she moved to live with her mother. Young Oprah was repeatedly molested by male relatives. The abuse, which lasted from the ages of nine to 13, was emotionally devastating. After running away from her home and giving birth to a baby boy who died in infancy, she went to Nashville, Tennessee to live with her father.

After graduating high school, she entered Tennessee State University, majoring in radio and television broadcasting.

Popular and well liked, she was named Miss Tennessee State. Hired by local television station WTVF, Winfrey became the youngest and first African-American female anchor. Oprah Winfrey became the top American media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist.

Oprah Winfrey’s impact on the philanthropic sector and philanthropic lives of Americans (in particular) has been profound.  From the everyday heroes she highlights to the causes she covers through her media outlets (television, magazine, and film), Winfrey encourages philanthropy. As a generous wealthy donor, Winfrey takes a hands-on approach in making a difference in the world, often becoming involved in the causes and in promoting the organizations or causes to which she donates. The Oprah Winfrey Foundation has been an avenue for her substantial philanthropy. Additionally, she provides information on many venues through which her viewers and followers can become involved in the many issues or organizations she has highlighted throughout her career, ranging from Habitat for Humanity to Heifer International to women’s education to child abuse and neglect.

She has contributed millions of dollars across the globe toward education for underprivileged but merit-worthy children. In addition, the Oprah Winfrey Scholars Program provides scholarships to those who have a desire to give back to their communities. Reaching across borders, Oprah has partnered with South Africa Ministry of Education preparing young girls through the opportunity for schooling, building educational

facilities, providing school supplies, books, libraries, clothes, teacher education and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (opened in 2005).

As a public figure, Oprah’s influence is far reaching. Connected to her audience and her peers, she interacts with people in all walks of life. Winfrey is broadly recognized as a brilliant business woman, and a passionate spokes-woman for social causes. Her name and reputation warrant a great deal of respect and her worldwide exposure is overwhelming.

Through the power of media, Oprah Winfrey has created an unparalleled connection with people around the world. As host and supervising producer of the top-rated, award-winning The Oprah Winfrey Show, she entertained, enlightened and uplifted millions of viewers for 25 years. Her accomplishments as a global media leader and philanthropist have established her as one of the most respected and admired public figures today.

  1. I critiqued this essay in class. You did a good job defining the two personality traits and were informative on her early life and later accomplishments. There are a couple of run-on sentences but the grammar is good.

  2. All I can say is wow about your paper. This is great read. You really showed the two personality traits and really went into detail about them. There is a lot of information injected into this piece. I find myself really getting into this paper. The only really I could find wrong about this is few run on sentences. All in all I think this is a great paper.

    • Thank you so much for the compliment. I myself enjoyed writing this paper because I have so much respect for my hero, she truly is a one of kind woman. As for the run on sentences I will make sure to fix it in my final paper.

  3. Mac7903, it really was a great read. I found two personality traits but no societal contribution, I also felt the hero should have been introduced in the first paragraph and both comments failed to mention that third-person perspective was used a few times. Overall great essay Soha! I love your wide array of vocabulary, you used some great words on heroes in general I didn’t see in any other paper . Hope this helps 🙂
